spirit lake idahoThis lake was named by the Coeur d’Alenes Indians. The name means “Lake of the Spirit” and was given to this lake because of the ghost of a young girl who glides over the water in a phantom canoe. She has long black hair down to her waist and is always dressed in white. She is said to be the spirit of an Indian maiden who committed suicide after learning that her young warrior love had died in a tribal fight. Legend says she rowed her canoe to the center of the lake one moonlit night, jumped into the water and drowned herself. She can still be seen gliding across the lake in her ghostly canoe. Spirit Lake is in Northern Idaho panhandle near the Montana border.
