Yellowstone National Park, Yellowstone, WY

yellowstonefallsThe Crow Indians believed the mud pots and geysers around Yellowstone Lake to be possessed by evil spirits. They heard the voices of malevolent earth energies in the hissing water and stayed away. They believed the mountains at the head of the river to be the edge of the world. They believed by climbing up to the top and looking over the edge they could see into the next world. When the white settlers came and their soldiers massacred many of the Indians, the survivors were driven back to the great canyon of the Yellowstone River. To avoid being slaughtered by the white men, a group of the remaining Crow built and giant raft and floated over the falls to their death. Just as they went over the edge, they began chanting a mournful death dirge that can still to this day be heard rising from the mists and white foam under the falls.
